Obviously you have never worked with the old stuff. Lucky you say?

KNOT!

:p

The stuff is nearly as hard as aluminum. Having to carve a 1/2" off both sides the depth of the panel really sucks. The new plunge cutters make it a bit easier, but there is still real wood carving to be done to get the panel to fit correctly.
I honestly think aluminum is softer then most "hardwoods".

To make things even more fun, the real old places that have that rock hard oak, also have the wiring stapled to them with staples so long you could shoe a horse with them. They are usually pounded on so tight it's barely possible to remove them without damaging the old cable. Even when you do manage, it's a work out.
