Don't you love second hand info for troubleshooting! They said they heard arcing in the attic when it actually was in a wall!
That's why I don't pay a lot of attention to anything other than what I can see and read with my meter. I usually listen politely while the gears are turning in my head about the general problem.
I opened up the GFCI, mostly black soot. I have no idea on the timing of the failure, but it appears the line hot screw terminal had been hot. It never ceases to amaze me when people wrap the wire around the screw on a device that has clamping terminals via the back holes. If you put the wire in the hole, tighten it properly, and can't pull it out then you know you have a good connection. Around the screw, is the hook or proper pressure holding it?
