We have an attic that we are thinking about converting into a closet. the remodeler says 2x10 floor joists will have to be added alongside the existing 2x6's. currently, there are several wires running on top of the existing 2x6's. the remodeler said they would simply notch into the top of the new floor joists, lay the wires into the notches and then place steel plates over the nothches to protect the wires. Is that OK? He's not an eletrician. we are trying to see how much the attic renovation costs, and if some major rewiring needs to be done rather than what the remodeler is telling us, we'ed like to figure it in. Thanks.

Re: renovation

It sounds as though the builder would not be doing any new wiring and is telling you how he would work around the wiring. Using nail plates as he describes would be fine. It sounds as though he knows what he is doing.

Re: renovation

If he is comfortable with notching the new "sister" joists, and has accounted for the decrease in load carrying capacity caused by them, fine. 2x10's next to 2x6's sure sound like they should handle it. I assume this will occur in a limited number of places and not for the whole length of the floor. Otherwise the right way is to run new wire through holes in the joists.
