on the framing inspection,
how close to the edge of
a stud is the house
wiring allowed before the
need of a metal shield plate?
According to the NEC.
I believe the answer is 1.5".
Is this correct?

Re: Plate Shields for house wiring

It is 1.25"

Take a look at 300.4(A), 300.4(B), 300.4(D), 300.4(E).

If the requirement was 1.5" that would only let us drill a 1/2" hole in a standard 3.5" stud.

A 1/2" hole would be worthless for power wiring.

With the 1.25" requirement we can drill a 1" hole dead center in a standard stud actually allowing some power wiring to pass through. :)
