Will the new GFCIs that do the self testing work on an ungrounded system? Meaning do they test for the existence of an EG?

AFAIK there is no requirement for that test, especially since the NEC describes the use of GFCI receptacles to update two wire receptacle circuits.

Those typically are on a grounded system, but you did answer my question.

The self test is testing the GFCI circuitry. It doesn't care if an EGC is part of the circuit. The test button has never used the EGC.
