Job has a 400 amp main service with main Breaker with 400 amp breaker panel . The 400 amp service is on a detached garage although it is connected by a covered walk way to the main house. The house has a100 amp panel installed in the utility room which is fed by a 2/3 alum. SE cable, fed from the 400 amp service, the owner want to locate the new generator on the far side of the house due to gas meter close to that area . Would it meet NEC to intercept existing 100 amp panel feed in attic install junction box, install new feed thru attic to far side of house connect to new auto transfer switch then install load off transfer back to existing house panel only ? The generator would only provide power to the house 100 amp panel in the home thru a auto transfer switch. Thank you for you help .

What about the separate EGC that should be ran from the 400amp service panel to the 100 amp (sub panel)?

The cable is a three conductor not a four conductor, so if a 400 amp auto transfer switch was installed on this same job a new four wire feed would be required to be installed to the existing 100 amp panel in side the home ?

Maybe I did not describe this job completely , this existing 400 amp service was installed when the home was built in 1991 when a standard accepted NEC approved installation was a 2/3 cable to sub panels , and when you install a generator on a existing service that has a 3 wire feed to sub panels today we are not replacing the existing 3 wire feed to sub panels .

So this was installed back when you could re bond the neutral at a separate structure. The generator will work there is just some debate to be had about if the house and garage are separate.

Main 400 amp service is on Garage which is attached to the home by a covered walkway , wiring is installed from main service thru overhead attic of covered walkway ( which has no access ) into attic of home , then thru attic of home to house only electrical panel. the feeder is a 2 wire with ground alum. # 2 SE Cable . Thanks to everyone for their input I am just trying to make sure this is a safe and NEC approved install .
