Existing commercial building with electric meter room at one end and multiple water meters to units at other end. What does code require for bonding/grounding of water service? All services appear to be copper pipe.

Unfortunately, you must meet 250.52(A)(1) and go to the other end of the building with your grounding electrode conductor. :D

There's a chance 250-104(A)(2) may apply. They have to be metallically isolated. Then you can bond each system in each unit. If they are metal all the way to a common point on the supply side then as Charlie says you have to go all the way.

How about if there is effectively grounded steel in this building, and you install the GEC to the steel and bond the cold water to the steel as part of the GEC System?

Pierre, that is one of the problems with reading a question instead of talking to someone in person or even on the phone. I was thinking about a commercial building that was of frame construction and didn't have a steel structure that you could use. I wonder is steel is available so that can be done? Good catch. :D

Thanks for the responses. This is not a metal building. What they did was to extend a water pipe from one of the units closest to the meter room and bond that to the conductor running to the ground rod. This was done when no connection could be found. Building was built in early 1980's. If this is a continuous copper water system is that sufficient for all the units? What if plastic pipe was used? Were requirements different in early 1980's?
