Generator Sub panel

A homeowner has a service disconnect mounted on a pole near the road ( meter socket and main breaker). The feeder to the sub panel is about 250feet, four wire. The sub panel is a main breaker panel ( not a main lug). Does the code allow an inter-lock to be used on the sub-panel? Once the sub panel main is off the L1/L2 are disconnected from energizing the utility lines. Or is a transfer switch needed for this type of install? Looking for some advice. Thank you.

The homeowner has a 12kw portable generator and would like to use the interlock to backfeed the sub panel.

A generator can be used on a sub panel. Not a problem at all.

The sub panel is a main breaker panel ( not a main lug).

As it should, as a separate structure.

Does the code allow an inter-lock to be used on the sub-panel?

Yes, standard interlock installation.
