Good evening,

I just installed a 200a Kohler ATS today. I have started doing these installs for a local company that sells and installs these generators. All they have me do is install the ATS, tie into the main, wiring between Genset and ATS and control wiring. Since June I have done about 50 installs. So, today I installed 2/0 wire from Main breaker to ATS and then 2/0 back to lug kit on main distribution. The Gen only has a 70a breaker so we pulled #4 from gen to ATS. The most difficult part was getting the (5) 2/0 through the gutter and into the main panel. I typically size my neutral the same as my current conductors which bonds the ATS neutral back to the main. I started to think why can’t I size that neutral to the main the same size (#4 THW) that I ran from the Gen to the ATS? The generator can and will only ever carry a max of 70 Amps when feeding back to main in “emergency“ situations so in theory it would work fine. I may have to crack the NEC book for this answer.
Any thoughts?
