I am studying for the California Contractors Exam. I bought Mike Holt's videos. He does a fine presentation on the relationship between Table 310.16 and Section 110.14(C)(1)(a). I'm pretty sure I get it. If my terminals are not identified as 75?C terminals, I've got to use the 60?C column of Table 310.16. Otherwise, my circuit is designed to have the conductor operating at a temperature higher than the rating of the terminal.

Well, my house has an old FPE panel. On the side of the breaker's brown plastic housing, next to the terminal, it is stamped "40?C." What am I supposed to do about sizing conductors? THERE IS NO 40?C column and I can't find anything about an adjusment factor when your terminals are only marked 40.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

DS

The 40C is the ambient temperature rating, not the terminal/conductor rating. If there is no other marking the breaker is only rated for 60C conductors.
