FIRE PUMP FEEDERS

I have a question regarding Fire pump feeders and hope someone will give his/her thoughts.

We are going to have a Generator (located outside) to support some critical loads in a building. It is not a required system. There will be a Geneartor Distribution Panel(GDP) inside the building to support the loads and there will be ATS s for each load.

The existing fire pump will also be supported by this generator distribution panel. Are we required to have "Fire Rated Feeders" from "generator" to "GDP" and from "GDP" to "Fire pump rated ATS"? My doubt is as it is non required system.

Thanks.

Re: FIRE PUMP FEEDERS

The intent of NEC 695 is to have the fire pump power protected to the extent possible from fire. By using the generator, the AHJ may decide that the reason is that power is not now acceptable and the generator may become required.

You need to consider the following:
1) NEC 695.3(2) wants the the equipment protected from fire, the indoor location may not provide this.
(2)NEC 695.10 requires the ATS to be listed for the fire pump.
(3) NEC 695.12(A) requires power transfer switches to be at the motor.
(4) NEC 695.6 requires short circuit protection only.
(5) NEC 695.6(A) exception: Only load side conductors from the ATS are required underground or in concrete (230.6(1).

Re: FIRE PUMP FEEDERS

Local MA code would require 2 separate feeders from the generator, one for the critical loads nad one for the fire pump. the fire pump feeder being 2 hour rated.
