i am doing a job ( restaurant ) that has a MDP ( main distribution panel ) feeding several smaller panels throughout the job. the raceway is RGC above ground and PVC underground. the print specified the size of the grounding conductor to be pulled to each panel but the owner of the shop says the largest grounding conductor needed is #6. i think the conductor should be sized according to 250.122. who is correct ?

thanks

Re: equipment grounding conductor ?

Two things come to mind.

Code wise you must size the grounds by table 250.122 that is the purpose of that table.

You also must follow the rules of 250.122 which means if the feeders are up sized for voltage drop you must up size the grounding conductors also.

You say the print shows the sizes to be used, well that is what the job is bid on and if you do not provide it the customer has every right to make you re pull it with the conductor they paid for.

Bob, you know better than that. 250.122 is minimum, not a must. If the prints call for something bigger than 250.122 it is OK.

So take a look at the 250.122, and if the #6 meets or exceeds the requirement install as specified. If it falls short, you need to address it with the engineer or designer.

No problem Bob. There is not enough info to tell if a # 6 is large enough. If the feeders are 200-amp or less, then 6 will do it.
