I am measuring the primary current of a .5 kva single phase transformer thru a line splitter that has a times 10 loop. No load on the secondary.

If there is no load on the secondary you are only measuring magnetizing current.
You are probably seeing the effect of the core going slightly into saturation. We say 'go into saturation' as if it is a solid boundary, but really it is a curve as the permeability of the steel changes.
