The middle third in both directions is the safest area to penetrate.

Are you sure. The largest moment on a horizontal beam is in the middle of the beam. The closer you get to either support the less the moment.

Yes, I'm sure.

The center of a beam is where the greatest stress is on the edges; top has most compression and bottom has most tension.

The web has the least stress.

The ends are where, as Paul stated, the greates shear force is concentrated.
