I installed a Nutone 8664P Fan/Light just outside the shower/tub by about 6 inches or so. I had my inspection and the inspector asked me if it was gfci protected and I said no, He told me that the shower/tub area extends out 3' I disagreed. I think he is referring to Article 410.4(D) for hanging fixtures, lighting track, pendants, or ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans.
Your interpretation please.

You might also ask the Inspector for the NEC article that he is using as a basis for requiring GFCI protection.

I believe the instructions say "over a tub or shower" not "within the space as defined in the NEC". Yours is not over and therfore gfci is not required.
