By "always", Auto transformer as is a motor starter or as in a buck/boost transformer?

An autotransformer is almost transparent to harmonics and the fault currents pretty horrendous, the tertiary winding is to control both.
For a motor starter I wouldn?t expect to see one, for the time it?s in circuit it?s not worth the expense.
