Do you read this to mean that all outside receptacles require in-use covers? I read it to mean that any outside outlet that has an unattended tool or device plugged in require these but service receptacles do not. What do you think?

Re: Article 406.8-b

There are two categories for 406.8(b) both with different rules:

For 406.8(b)(1) must have weatherproof enclosure for attended or non-attended.

For 406.8(b)(2) must have weatherproof enclosure when plug is removed if attended; if unattended must have cover that is weatherproof when unattended.

That's my read on it.

Re: Article 406.8-b

If you are reading the 2002 NEC, notice that 406(B)(2) only applies to recetpacles that are NOT 15 or 20A, 125 or 250 volt (pretty uncommon).

OUtlets under a covered porch would fall under 406.8(A) for a damp location. These would not require in use covers.

So basically: all 15 & 20A, 125 or 250V receptacles in a wet location do need in-use covers.

Thanks for filling in any gaps in my answer. The followup answer is further clarification and does not contradict my answer. Both answers are not mutually exclusive. Both answers are correct.

Thanks for the input, As Steve said all 120\250 volt receptacles rated at 15 or 20 amp require in-use covers. My question is.. what does other receptacles mean? This needs to be clarified as it is not at all clear what they are talking about.

Re: Article 406.8-b

"Other Receptacles" would be any receptacle that is rated above 20 amps or a voltage other than 125 or 250.

For example if you had a 30 anp dryer receptacle outside for some reason, or if you had 480 volt receptacle located outside. (most if not all 480 volt receptacles are designed to be weather proof when in use)
