What does the NEC say about water and sewer lines sharing a trench with electrical conduits? Is that allowed? Do the water and sewer lines have to maintain a certain distance from the electrical conduits?

There is no rule or specification in the NEC regarding this question. Some utility companies or your local POCO may have specific separation requirements for utilities under their control and ownership. :)

I think it depends on many factors such as:
1- the temperature of the water (hot or cold).
2- the dimensions of the trench which controls the separation distance between them.
3- the type of cable installation directly in ground or in pipes (PVC or STEEL)

and in my opinion if the water is hot it is better to keep your cables away from (but not above)the hot water lines (not less than 10cm spacing).

water and sewer can be installed in the same trench without seperation provided materials approved for use in or under the house;ie abs, pvc, are used outside.i have no problem if electrical is tossed in.the poco may have something to say if it is before the meter.
