trying to locate manufacturer

I recently found an octagon box with a curious cover on it, and have not been able to identify the manufacturer of the cover.
On the raised portion of the cover it says
"DRIP GRIND" AND "KEY ON BOTTOM" , with a $1.79 price tag.
I have narrowed it down to :
A. FOLGERS
B. MAXWELL HOUSE
C. MICKEY MOUSE,
wtih strong tendency toward C.
As son as I can I will get my film developed and maybe scan it so I can e-mail it.

I agree with "C." It sounds to me like a homeowner installed a box, but forgot to buy a cover. So instead of making another trip to Big Orange, he cut the top of a coffee can into an octagon shape, drilled holes for the screws, and installed it. Is the material of the cover obviously different than that of the box?

With the price of steel, this may be the wave of the future. ;)

It looks like you will never find it in an electrical supply house, nor for that matter (not that it matters), at Big Orange.

Re: trying to locate manufacturer

I hear you Jim, I doubt that NM was inspected before but it has been now and that Tuna can cover is gone. :)

One of my friends was doing a service change and when I stopped by he pointed out the Tuna can cover.

This was just one of many violations that have been corrected.

I do not believe the old "BX" was ever listed for grounding use and it is not a NEC approved grounding means today, 250.118.

I have been told NY feels differently about this.

I think buildings need to be reinspected at least once every 10 years and before they are sold. This would stop the unpermited repairs and add ons as they will get caught.

Problem with that Jim is most states allow home owners to do there own work. The only true times a home inspection can be forced is for insurance and selling like in getting a loan. Unless it's obvious that the structure is about to fall down.

Re: trying to locate manufacturer

If the bonding were sufficient, there would be nothing wrong with the installation. A tuna can or coffee can lid would probably give better protection than a plastic blank plate.

Plus it adds some character to what would normally be a bland looking box.

Covers are not required to be listed for the purpose.

Bob,

Please elaborate a bit on the last part of your statement.

Re: trying to locate manufacturer

Bill I imagine you are asking about the NY part of my post.

I hang out at another forum or two (I know, hard to believe :D ) that have some pretty sharp people out of the NY area who where adamant that NY AHJs approve the old BX for use as an EGC.

I have not seen any references to back that up, I gave up arguing about it. :p

Do you have any info about this either way?
