I am installing some surge protection in a residential loadcenter and have a couple of questions. I was told to wrap the neutral wire around the two power wires that feed the surge suppressor from the circuit breaker mounted to the buss, why.

Re: Surge Protection

Told by whom? This sounds odd to me. Is it in the manufacturer's instructions?

Re: Surge Protection

Proper installation is to twist, not wrap, all the conductors to the TVSS together to closely couple them magnetically together. This will minimize (cancell) the voltage drop incurred during a TVSS event. In addition the conductors should be no longer than 6-inches from the device to point of connection to retain the UL-1440 SVR.

Do you mean to twist the conductors together like 'twisted' pair wiring?

If so, since the ungrounded conductors are terminated at a different location than the grounded conductors, would it make any difference if one was to twist them for even just a short distance?

YES! That is why it is preferable to use a panel with built in TVSS rather than add-ons. With an add-on unit (parallel), it is almost impossible?to install per UL-1449 and ANSI C61.42 recommendations.
