Surface vs. Recessed Fixture

If you have a 1x4 do you differentiate bet. surf. or rec.? Curious as to why? Reason I do.

1. Spec usually says surf to be run in tubing, not MC
2. Surface less time consuming than rec.
3. 4" box and whips req. could be different

If you're asking if the labor on the fixture itself are different, then the answer is no....the book says they are roughly the same.
Items 1 and 3 are irrelevant
