Sub panel

Quick question. My sister has a sub panel fed by a 40a breaker. She wants to install a new electric range which also takes a 40a breaker. Can I have a 40a in the sub panel which is also protected at 40? The home run to the main is from the other side of the house, in the basement and through player walls (house is over 100 years old).

It depends what the load is on the panel. In most cases you wouldn't be able to do that without some upgrade.
