Good morning all,

Question : When installing a sub panel in a outbuilding that will be fed from the house main service panel can three wires (L, L, N) be run to the subpanel with the use of ground rods at the outbuilding location ? Also, does there need to be a main in the sub panel because it is in a separate structure and does that main have to match the amp rating of the OCPD in the main service panel in the home
Thank you

A separate building supplied by a feeder must have an equipment grounding conductor supplied with the feeder and a grounding electrode system. Per NEC 250.32.

Four wire to outbuilding with neutral and EG isolated at outbuilding. Establish a GES at the outbuilding with it connected to the EG..

A main breaker is required, assuming you have more than one circuit In the outbuilding. It may be larger or smaller than the one in the house.
