Standard residential garage power and lighting question...

Receptacles in garage are supposed to be GFCI protected according to code right...?

Does the lighting circuit HAVE to be protected by GFCI also?

Or does the lighting HAVE to be afci protected?

Or can the lighting just be fed from a standard single pole 15 amp breaker?

Last question does the code permit garage lighting and receptacles to be fed fed from the same breaker?

Or should garage receptacles be on one GFCI circuit and garage lighting be on another circuit by itself?

Please support your answer with code reference s. Thank you in advance!

After reading. It looks like the garage lighting and receptacles should be GFCI protected. The acception is when there is a ceiling lighting box that is non accessible.

210.12. thanks

I don't know what Code cycle you are using but your answer and reference certainly aren't in '17.

I don't have a 2020 NEC but in the 2017 and back, I know of no lighting that is required to be GFCI. AFCI is a different story.

You might look at 314.16 and Table 314.16(B) .

Not your question, but once you post a picture, it’s fair game.:)

I cant tell what size box is used. I assume this is in reference to the 3 12-2 NM and the GFCI? Its does not jump out to me as an issue unless it was a shallow box.

Receps do need GFCI in garage - 210.8 A

Lighting does not need GFCI

AFCI is not required in garage. - 210.12A Garage is not listed

Feed lighting and garage anyway you want. Receps need to be 20A. Lighting can be whatever.

I should edit my above post:

I was looking for the reference requiring 20A garage receps and found it. 210.11 C 4

You need to feed garage receps to the min of 210.52 G 1 and 210.11 C 4
