We have several research labs with safety showers near the front doors. Of course that's where the light switches are located and usually a outlet near by. My question, what is the distance requirement that light switches and outlets have to be from safety showers? Do the outlets have to be GFCI?

This is a safety shower not a bathing shower.
However I would say the light switch has to be suitable for the enviroment, and as safety showers have to be tested weekly, then the switch would have to be weatherproof. GFCI protection is probably not required.
In a residential application, you can't have switches and recptacles in the shower. but you don't have the clearly defined walls of shower, so there is not an easy answer. How far does the water spray when the shower is used?
The answer really depends on who is asking. If you want safety, then weatherproof switch (covers) and GFCI repctacles and bubble covers. If you are only concerned with the NEC requirements, then what you have may be OK. The NEC is a minium.
