2. Make a fist, then thumb out straigh and little finger extended to the side approx 6". This might depend on the size of your hand.

3. Of course the reach rule. Hand to hand 6'. So hand to center of chest 3'.

4. Not sure wether to ground or not, ground.

Tolerances (fourth band) are: nothing = 20%, silver = 10%, gold = 5%

OK, it's been a long time, and well there have been a few brain altering moments between my Navy time and now.

What I heard was that if a husband knocked his wife around, as long as the bruising was smaller than a thumb print, it was not considered a problem.

Close, it is an old law, that you could whip you wife with a rod as long as it was smaller in diameter than your thumb.

The Wikipedia entry for Rule Of Thumb notes that the term appears in multiple languages and cultures and is old enough that documentation of origin has been elusive. Some of the other possible origins relate to measurement of something like an inch, detecting the direction of the wind, judging the brew temperature in beer making, etc.
