2. Make a fist, then thumb out straigh and little finger extended to the side approx 6". This might depend on the size of your hand.

Resistor color code:

Bad Beer Rots Our Young Guts, But Vodka Goes Well.

Black Brown Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet Grey White

Here's how I learned it in the Navy, I don't think it's dirty just not something to do.

Bad Boys Rape our Young Girls Behind Victory Garden Walls.

Then for the tolerances: But Violet Gives Freely.

I guess if it's to offensive the moderators will delete it. My appologies in advance.

Freely? What color starts with F?

...But Violet Gives Willingly is how I remember it.

Tolerances (fourth band) are: nothing = 20%, silver = 10%, gold = 5%

as long as the bruising was smaller than a thumb print
. . . .or the stick used was not larger in diameter than the thumb. . . .

The Wikipedia entry for Rule Of Thumb notes that the term appears in multiple languages and cultures and is old enough that documentation of origin has been elusive. Some of the other possible origins relate to measurement of something like an inch, detecting the direction of the wind, judging the brew temperature in beer making, etc.
