We have research labs with safety showers near the front doors. Of course that's where the light switches are located and usually a outlet near by. My question, what is the distance requirement that light switches and outlets have to be from the shower? Do the outlets have to be GFCI?

This is not covered by the NEC. For dwelling units, the receptacle cannot be within the shower or tub space. Next to it, ok but not in it. And it should be GFCI'd. There is no requirement for switches.

My suggestion: Relocate the switches and receptacles out of the shower area. Or relocate the shower area.
