Just wondering if there are any codes stating, that either you can or can not, in a panel upgrade use the existing panel box for a junction box after removing bus and bars. Help is greatly apprieciated.

Re: panel upgrade

Make proper splices and joints, ensure proper enclosure bonding, and ensure the cabinet is of proper size to accomodate total fill.

It would also be a good idea to add wire labels and identify all circuits. :)

Boxes are not required to be listed. So long as your box meets the construction specifications of 410.40 - 410.44 and you close all unused openings (110.12), I would allow its use. The building code requires the re-use of used equipment to be approved by the building inspector, however. If it were convenient, I would pre-approve it's use with the BO prior to completing the job. Might save a lot of work later. NEC 110.2 also requires all equipment to be approved by the AHJ.
