what type cabling is allowed to be used for a low voltage termostat wire to control a roof top A/C unit

If the cable is passing through a plenum ceiling, make sure the cable is plenum rated. (cmp)

JohnJ: chances are this is not a plenum space but air handling space. A plenum is inside a duct. The area above a suspended ceiling may be used for return air, or not.
See table 725.61 for cable types and substitutions are shown in Figure 725.71. CL2 may not be the correct cable.

guy thanks for your responces, I now think I know what to use now, I left out the fact that I will be passing through floors that being said I believe I will need CL2R. Is that correct?
