I always take the locknuts off when putting a connector into an LB looks like a hack job to me if you leave them on.

I agree. Even in dry locations when using EMT connectors into the conduit body I always use compression since there is no set screw to orientation to deal with. Or if I only have set screw connectors then I'll try about 15 maybe 20 of them until I get the screw to line up properly.
