If using metal boxes for switches in a sheetrock wall, do I have to use grding tails to a standard switch or are the screws a grding means?

404.9(B)(1) permits the switch screws to bond the switch when installed in a grounded metallic box.

Grounding pigtails are required for receptacles as the receptacle ground is part of the ground fault return path. The switch yoke is bonded to the equipment grounding conductor so a metal faceplate will be bonded.

If you are using metalic pipe and metalic boxes, then no grounding strap is required for switches or recepticles, the conduit is the ground path.

Scott: For a receptacle it depends on the type of metal box and receptacle.
1. A bonding jumper is not required for self grounding recepetacle in a metal box, or mud ring
2. A bonding jumper is not required for a surface mount metal box (bell box) if direct metal to metal contact is made between the yoke and the box (remove the fiber washers)
3. For a raised cover a grounding jumper is required.
The ground fault return path has to be maintained between the receptacle and the box. For example if a self grounding receptacle was replaced with a non self grounding recpetacle than the ground fault return path can not be assured. See Section 250.146
