I've just read through this section of the code and from what I can tell I can run the GEC secured to the exterior side of a building. This assumes the inspector agrees that it is not "subject to physical damage." Any thoughts on this? I am working on temping up an old building that will be demolished so I am not worried about looks.

I didn't see any length restrictions on the GEC, did I miss something. Practically I would think shorter is better but am I allowed to make this wire as long as necessary?

In most cases if properly secured to the building IMO it is not subject to physical damage. I know of no length restriction for a GEC. In commercial buildings GEC's can be several hundred feet long.

If you are under the 2020 NEC, they have added "Schedule 80" when enclosing the GEC in PVC. If the GEC is #6 and larger, it can be run exposed when not subject to physical damage. But you're still under the interpretation of the AHJ as to what "physical damage" is.
