Fluorescent lights flickering

We wired a community center with 277 volt lighting. We have several troffers that flicker for a few seconds after you turn the switch off. We have checked the wireing, grounding, etc and cannot find anything. Our next step is changing the ballast to see if we got a bad batch  . Has anyone ever heard of this problem...our lighting rep. has not.

Thanks for your help.

Are you using simple switches or solid state timers or sensors? I've heard of this happening when solid state switching is used.

Are all the fixtures on the 277 volt circuit of this type? Same ballasts?

Most reputable ballast companies will investigate problems and maybe do a forensic. If they are a imported brand, you're probably screwed.

Try replacing the ballast with another brand on a couple of fixtures that consistently exhibit the symptoms. That might be interesting if you're trying to negotiate with the ballast company.

One other thing we discovered yesterday....All the fuxtures that are having the flicker issue are on the the same phase in the panel. If you move the circuit to another phase this fixes the problem. We have the lights all balanced across three phases with A,B,C sharing the same neutral but the loads are all the same. (Range from 13-15 amps per phase.)

Not every light on this phase are flickering with the switch off. It is just a portion.

Clarification: There are 4-5 circuits that are on A Phase that are having this problem. Not every light that is on A phase is doing it. As I mentioned above we are sharing neutrals in a family of A,B,C...but all three phases have a balanced loads on the fixtures.

are these fixtures equipped with an emergency backup ballast?

If they're all on the same phase, is there something that is still connected to the hot conductor besides the lights after the switch is opened?

Re: Fluorescent lights flickering

We replaced the ballast in a few of the fixtures and this solves the problem. I will call Advance today. Thanks for all the good advice.
