Explosion Proof/Intrinsic Safe Zone

I occasionally design projects requiring explosion proof and/or intrinsic safe control system design. Our customer verbally instructs us on the area and size of the safety zone. A typical zone being a 5-foot radius around an open container of liquor. My question is how do I protect myself and my company from being held liable if the zone we are given is proven to be insufficient and something blows up? Is it sufficient to get the requirement (Class, Div, Group and zone area) in writing from the customer?

I'd would think that if you aren't designing to nationally recognized standards (i.e., NFPA 30 and NFPA 70), you could be held liable if something goes wrong.

three things that i would do.
1. get it in writing from the customer.
2. get a pe to review the system you designed
based upon the information you were given.
3. contact the local ahj and discuss items
1&2 with him.

You appear to already know the answer, which is to do it correctly. You can be held responsible even if the owner provides a letter, especially if you are making or signing the plans.
