Emergency Disconnects for 1 - 2 Family Dwellings.

Based on CMP 10 task group action on various proposals related to 230.85, this will go away in the 2026 code and the code will simply require that the service disconnect for one and two-family dwellings be located outside in a readily accessible location on or within sight of the dwelling. This change is based on all of the confusion with the 3 types of emergency disconnects in the 2020 and 2023 codes. Note that this was only task group action, and any change will require a 2/3s volt of all of the panel members to become a change.

In the above post. What are the three (3) types of emergency disconnects he is speaking about?

Thank You. Nick M Pavicic, CEI City of Wayne Michigan Electrical Inspector

2020 NEC 230.85 Emergency Disconnects.
For one- and two-family dwelling units, all service conductors shall terminate in disconnecting means having a short-circuit current rating equal to or greater than the available fault current, installed in a readily accessible outdoor location. If more than one disconnect is provided, they shall be grouped. Each disconnect shall be one of the following:
(1)Service disconnects marked as follows:
EMERGENCY DISCONNECT,
SERVICE DISCONNECT
(2)Meter disconnects installed per 230.82(3) and marked as follows:
EMERGENCY DISCONNECT,
METER DISCONNECT,
NOT SERVICE EQUIPMENT
(3)Other listed disconnect switches or circuit breakers on the supply side of each service disconnect that are suitable for use as service equipment and marked as follows:
EMERGENCY DISCONNECT,
NOT SERVICE EQUIPMENT
Markings shall comply with 110.21(B).

2023 NEC 230.85 Has a "B" section with the marking criteria in section "E"
(B) Disconnects.
Each disconnect shall be one of the following:
(1) Service disconnect
(2) A meter disconnect integral to the meter mounting equipment not marked as suitable only for use as service equipment installed in accordance with 230.82
(3) Other listed disconnect switch or circuit breaker that is marked suitable for use as service equipment, but not marked as suitable only for use as service equipment, installed on the supply side of each service disconnect

Don't see these criteria actually disappear unless it reverts back to the 2017 code that had no such allowance or language.

230.85 will show as deleted in the First Draft Report unless a change was made last week by the Correlating Committee. The final ballot results have been published showing the actual First Draft Meeting votes. The deletion of 230.85 passed by a vote of 18-0.
230.70(A) will include the following language. This also passed 18-0.
(2)One- and Two-Family Dwellings.
Service disconnects shall be installed in a readily accessible outdoor location on or within sight of the one- or two-family dwelling unit.
