data/phone color code

Every six months or so, we include phone/data installation in our residential bid. I can't seem to remember how the colors are paired with a single phone jack (4 prong) and CAT5e cable. All I remember is that we discard the green and brown, and use the orange and blue from CAT5. The four prongs colors are yellow, black, red, and green.

Doesn't matter what CAT cable you are using, the colors are all the same. You really need to get some reference material if you have a problem remembering this. A Leviton communications products catalog has all the info in the back. Write it down and keep it in your wallet. There is a system to it that goes to 25 pairs. You need to figure it out then you won't have a problem remembering.

white/blue= tip pair #1
blue/white= ring

white/orange=tip pair #2
orange/white=ring

By the way, white/blue is a white with a blue marker (or maybe just all white if you have crummy cable), blue/white is a blue with a white marker. These are twisted pairs, each pair is a line.

You SHOULD know that:
green= tip pair #1
red= ring

black= tip pair #2
yellow= ring

Most Leviton and P&S wall jacks have a little instruction paper packaged with every jack.

A little trivia:

The term tip and ring came from the wiring of 1/4" phone jacks (tip terminal or ring terminal) like the one's the operators used to connect customers to the lines back in the old days. These same jacks and plugs today are still used for guitar connections and PA systems.
