Connecting lightning protection to service

I'd like to get some input about connecting lightning protection to the main service ground rod. The local inspector says that it must all be connected together equalizing all potential, but I would think you would want to direct any lightning as far from the service as possible. any thoughts?

Re: Connecting lightning protection to service

To keep the two systems separate is asking for all your electronic to explode, burn down your house down, and electrocute the occupants. If you left the two separate your coaxes, EGC, shielded cables, etc would try to equalize the potential between the two systems during a lightning fault via the mechanism of step potential differences.

Same principal applies to isolated grounding receptacles. They cannot be on serarate grounding system either.

Are you saying it would try to equalize through the earth between the lightning ground rods and the service ground rod?

It can try to equalize with "side flashes". That is small lighting bolts jumping from one grounding system to the other.
