Does anyone know if an explosionproof device automatically make it a Class 1, Div 1 device? Are there instances where a device is rated for both Class 1, Div 2 and explosionproof, but not need a Class 1, Div 1 rating?

explosion proof devices typically have their rating listed on the device and paperwork that comes with the device.

just because its explosion proof doesn't mean that its approved for class 1 div 1. there are class 1,2,3 environments as well as groups a-g.

look at nec 2002 section 500 for your application.

pwhite,
Actually the term "explosion proof" only applies to Class 1 locations. Class 2 locations use the terms "dust ignition proof" and "dust tight". Class 3 locations use the term "dust tight".

nmui,
The equipment cannot just say "explosion proof". It must be marked for the Division and Group that it can be used in. In most cases if the words "explosion proof" appear on the equipment, the equipment will be labeled for Class 1 Division 1 locations.
