What does sq. ft. have to do with the cost of the thing?

Yes, there is something to do with your service calculation but that's it.
Do you buy a Lexus by the pound or cost/pound?
What do you do if you quote $2.50/sq. ft. and the customer says he only has $25 so he just wants you to do the 10 square feet where the service panel is?
You might visit the Estimating and Takeoffs forum at JLConline, Bob Kovaks forum for more information. Basically you total up your costs, add overhead and profit and thus get your price. Guessing the labor is the mystical part.

I have actually used this method once for a home builder and it worked out pretty good. These were basic tract homes where no options or upgrades needed to be considered. I did the work on one model, figured my costs and desired profit, and then determined what the cost per sq.ft. worked out to. I then used this number for the other models. Some bigger some smaller.

I now use a combination method where certain items are at a per opening unit and others are at total square footage units.

So, what types of things would you do by the footage as opposed to the opening?
