Hi folks,

Should an AFCI circuit trip if an appliance (vacuum, hair dryer) is plugged in while in the ON position?
Is the "arc" that jumps from the plug terminal to the receptacle enough to trip the breaker and SHOULD it?
Thanks

Re: AFCI Tripping

I have seen them trip when unplugging them but to have one trip when plugging them in. well I would say it shouldn't.

Think of it this way:
wouldn't the contact in the plug just act like the contact in a switch?

Now if you mess around and just barely make contact causing it to arc or turn of and on sevral times before getting the plug in then it might trip. But you should just plug it in like you mean it. Not likt your thinking about it.

May I ask if this question is based on an actual experience, perhaps a customer complaint? I?m just wondering whether the trip happens every time you try the ?experiment,? or whether it was a one-time event. Or is this a ?ghost problem? that sometimes happens and sometimes does not, and you are looking for possible causes.
