It not only includes a subpanel but some other control circuits for the pool (things to periodically run the circulating pump and heater, ...).

Why do they use a panel called a pool panel? Couldn't any panel be used as a pool panel ? Or is it the corrosive environment ?
Nothing special about them. Just as was mentioned, a few extras in there. Most times, I find you could just put in a 3R panel. install a timer beside it, maybe a control for the fancy lighting, for cheaper than what the "pool panels" cost. I usually run the pump and heater off a timer anyway so I don't need a "pool panel". I think it's mostly a gimmick to sell a "special panel" for pools. Makes the pool owners feel warm & fuzzy for having it!

they are not cheap, either. "pool automation" is a profit stream for equipment manufacturers.

as far as bonding pools, my own pool has two stainless steel ground rods, one at each end of the pool, 8' long,
with a #6 copper bond in a loop around it. everything is connected to it, all of it is hypressed. stainless steel ground
rods are a requirement where i live. very aggressive petrochemicals in the soil. all the #6 is just under the pavers, in sand.

did i need two 8' stainless steel ground rods? nope. if anyone asks, they are stakes to keep the ground wires from becoming
airborne during earthquakes.

In my world, the pool panel in my case, is the Jandy automation sub-panel. It's a 100 amp capacity sub that houses breakers and the relays needed for the equipment. Pentair is a competitor.
Prior to these automated systems, conventional time clocks were used, like Intermatic or Torx. Pools of the 60's and the 70's were simple. Most were just stuck in the backyard with a chain link at the patio edge. Some with those distinctive blue and white slats.

Because the pool industry has changed dramatically in 20 years, incorporating out door living, there's not just a filter pump, a light and maybe and auto cleaner pump.
Multiple pumps and auxiliary devices are used, i.e. air blowers, water fall pumps, fountains, lighting of all types, etc.... Outdoor kitchens, firepits...

Job I'm on now is a pool/spa combo. (4) pumps, (2) air blowers, 4000K BTU heater, LED lights, fire bowls in the boulder work, landscape lighting ALL to be controlled by automation. A key pad in the house or an app on your phone/computer/device controls the equipment. Wireless remotes are also available.

You probably won't see a system like this on an above ground pool, but, they are less expensive models available for these applications if so desired.

Hey Randy, hope you're not growing any tomatoes in that petrochemical soil :p

nope. not doing farming at this point.... on to new adventures.... at the risk of cross
pollinating the threads here, i'm not permitted to say.... but the 3K inverter works
fine up to the 2K load i put on it, and sucks the stock alternator dry, and starts pulling
the batteries down fast until the alarm squeals..... but i have an aftermarket alternator
that puts out 350 amps.... and 240 amps at idle, which will run the inverter at full
monty without pulling the batteries down.

y'all need to post pictures of the indiana jones theme park you are building, before this
thread deteriorates into a ground up / ground down session....
