I'm looking for an easy to use kWh recorder. I need to monitor branch circuit loads and don't want to install a utility meter. Hopefully whatever I get will fit inside the distribution panel so I don't have to hang a new box on the side. Any ideas? Thanks.

Emon makes a variety of sub metering products. My limited experience with them was A+. I'm sure there are others.

OP needs a data logger.

We use Extech because they're cheap and if they were to walk, no big deal (biggest deal is losing the data but it hasn't happened... yet).
2 channel recorder: http://www.extech.com/dl160/

It won't give you kWh but you can record both voltage and amperage and it will give you tables and graphs where you can do the calculations in excel.

We just use them to monitor line and load voltage on prototype builds to document the switching in test stations.

That's close to my application - thanks.
