Can you use nm cable in a commercial building? and when can't you use it?

Nm is permitted in commercial and see 334.10 (2014) for uses prohibited- however the "exact" definition of any building type where it may or may not be allowed is at the discretion of the ahj. For example, what may be prohibited by 334.10 might be allowed by ahj. There used to be a requirement I think where nm couldn't be in structures w/ more than "x" number of floors, but I believe that is gone from the NEC.

The building inspection or zoning department can classify the building. If it fits the criteria of what 334.10 allows then you can use nm cable, however, if there are suspended or hung ceilings then you cannot use nm in those ceilings.

334.12 Uses Not Permitted.
(A) Types NM, NMC, and NMS. Types NM, NMC, and
NMS cables shall not be permitted as follows:
(1) In any dwelling or structure not specifically permitted
in 334.10(1), (2), (3), and (5)
(2) Exposed in dropped or suspended ceilings in other
than one- and two-family and multifamily dwellings
(3) As service-entrance cable
(4) In commercial garages having hazardous (classified)
locations as defined in 511.3
(5) In theaters and similar locations, except where permitted
in 518.4(B)
(6) In motion picture studios
(7) In storage battery rooms
(8) In hoistways or on elevators or escalators
(9) Embedded in poured cement, concrete, or aggregate
(10) In hazardous (classified) locations, except where specifically
permitted by other articles in this Code.

What if NM was run in the walls and up through and above a drop ceiling into a junction box then transition to MC cable, would that be allowed?
Only place NM would be exposed or run would be to the jb and that would be near where the NM came through the top plate or through the dry wall if used.

Do it all time. Wired a few apartment building corridors that way.
