Get off your phone, put your butt in something other then compound low gear, shut up, listen and watch, anticipate what your journeyman needs, and you'll go far.

.

When I was just starting out, one day my boss was on the ladder and he said I need a locknut and I handed him one. Then he said I need two yellow......and I was already holding them up. Then he simply put his hand down and I put a screw driver in it. He looked at me and said, now you've got it.

I grew up doing that for my father.

One time he was tying in a water heater in the customer's basement with the customer watching. He says 'go get a romex connector', I hand over the romex connector. Then he says 'go get a wirenut' I hand over two reds. Then he says 'no, go get me two yellows'. For some reason I also had the yellows in my hand and handed them over, with a glance to the customer saying something like ' watch this, they won't fit'. So dad gives a half attempt to fit the yellows and then asks for the reds back.

I was definitely in grade school at the time. All through HS I jobbed independently in his van.
