Articles 220.54 and 220.55 state the minimum load to be calculated for ranges and cloths dryers respectively. My questions is, "Are branch circuits for cloths dryers and ranges mandatory?? If a single family dwelling will use gas for the range and dryer is it acceptable to just install 120VAC duplex receptacles near each location for lights and controls on the range and dryer?

I do not know of any required 230v receptacle outlet for a range or dryer that is mandatory in a dwelling. The kitchen permanent cooking appliance could be a number of appliance types other than 230 v range. A 230v dryer is more of a convienece. Laundry 120v is mandatory. BTW I would not personally limit my service to a minimun.

If this is new construction or a major renovation, I'd seriously consider installing those circuits even if not required; shouldn't cost that much in T&M. When/if the owners decide to install electric appliances, they'll thank you. I've seen at least a double handful of places where a gas dryer was replaced by electric, and partly because the receptacle was already there so it was easy.

I would never wire for an electric range, dryer or heat in a gas building unless the customer asked for it.

Definitely not in a place like NYC where you never see an electric dryer or range but in other areas, like where we are, I usually wire for electric especially if there is no way back to the panel at a future date.

I also would not wire for electric if I were doing multiple apartments where you have to bid against others. Gas it is in that case

To each their own, unless the customer requested it I would not run spare 30 and 50 amp circuits for free. Not going to happen.

What the local code says? If it says so, compliance required for running electric circuits in a gas installation building.

After a few replies --- Is this for bidding purposes only? If so bid as requested & install as bid as everyone else trying to get the job will do so. Never hurts to ask later after job is accepted so the client is aware of design.

Different regions may have different trends. Around here you automatically install receptacles for electric ranges and clothes dryers, unless owner requests not to. I seldom see a gas dryer. Gas ranges usually are only seen where the owner dislikes electric ranges. Some people prefer to cook over a real fire, which has advantages, but also can have higher risks for starting a fire if you don't pay careful attention.

Electric energy is also pretty cheap here compared to some parts of the country. Though right now (I think) gas prices are low enough that it may cost less, but how much energy does one use to cook compared to space heating, at least in the northern 2/3 of the country?
