2011 NEC....

A co-worker said that in the 2011 NEC there is a new code that says all under ground conduits must be filled with foam to seal them. Anyone know what article that is in? I haven't heard of this.

that is what I figured but he said a vendor showed him a product for just that application and he was told it was a new code just didn't really make sense to me.

Actually this is not a new requirement and it has been in the code for a number of cycles, here are a few article sections for reference (from the 08)

230.8 Raceway Seal.Where a service raceway enters a building or structure from an underground distribution system, it shall be sealed in accordance with 300.5(G). Spare or unused raceways shall also be sealed. Sealants shall be identified for use with the cable insulation, shield, or other components.

300.7 Raceways Exposed to Different Temperatures.(A) Sealing. Where portions of a cable raceway or sleeve are known to be subjected to different temperatures and where condensation is known to be a problem, as in cold storage areas of buildings or where passing from the interior to the exterior of a building, the raceway or sleeve shall be filled with an approved material to prevent the circulation of warm air to a colder section of the raceway or sleeve. An explosionproof seal shall not be required for this purpose.

300.5(G) Raceway Seals. Conduits or raceways through which moisture may contact live parts shall be sealed or plugged at either or both ends.

Be carefull using foams, some are not listed to be used around conductors.

True. I wonder if there is a code change in the 2014 that maybe he was talking about. Or maybe it was just a foam rated to be used in sealing conduits
