NO SUCH THING .
480/240 delta systems are all over the place supplying irrigation machines around this area, some have been around a while and some are new. Most of them are open delta, if load warrants having three transformer units they usually go with 480/277 wye, but there are still a few full delta 480/240 services around. Wild leg is about 415 volts to ground.

If load warrants having three transformers units they usually go with 480/277 wye, if you go with three transformers make it a closed delta. you would still have 240 single phase, the idea of 480/240 is to get 240 single phase, there is something missing i do not understand.

In many places: yes. But I do see the delta used where there is little or no single-phase load.

The 240 may be desired but not necessarily. You see 240/480 single-phase on things like lighting. The presence of the 240 may just be because they decided to ground at the center-tap.

Nobody cares about the availability of 240 for the most part as 240 volts is not normally needed at these sites, these irrigation machines are all 480 volt three phase, three wire machines, but typically only require no more than 30 amps, making them perfect candidates in the interest of the POCO for open delta services as two transformers cost less than 3. Also means only running three primary conductors instead of four out to some remote area. Like I said if the load warrants having three transformers they usually go with 480/277 wye, but there are some 480 volt full delta three phase systems still around.

You would only need three primary eater way.

That depends on the design of the system. Most of the time you see wye connected primary circuits on pole top transformers utilizing the grounded conductor, partly because a single bushing transformer is going to cost less. They also want to keep some consistency so that they limit the amount of types of transformers to keep in stock. They can build delta secondaries pretty easily out of same transformers they commonly have in stock for use on single phase services that way.
