I was out in our shop the other day, and saw a guy mounting a breaker in a control panel I designed. I took a quick glance at it and realized it was a 35kAIC breaker, but it was supposed to be a 65kAIC breaker. I could tell instantly by the type designation on the front of the breaker.

The box it came in was sitting there on the floor. The labeling on the box was correct. But somehow apparently the wrong breaker got put in the box at the factory.

On the bright side, we were able to get the right breaker in and managed not to ship something out that might have been a problem down the road.

On the not so bright side, I realized that I have memorized most of the type designations for the Siemens MCCB just from flipping through the catalog so much. I used to tell people I was mostly a software guy. Somehow along the way I became mostly a load bank and motor control panel designer.

I think if someone would have told me 5 years ago that I would be able to come up with a 1200 or 1600A MCCB part number from memory, I might well have laughed at the idea.

Did you get your part from the factory?
If not, a clerk at the distributor could have made the swap. Or a customer could have returned it.

If you have part numbers in your head, you need a LONG vacation.:D
