Why would removing the neutral wire fry some items.

I was recently upgrading a service on an older house that had the old cloth wire. I had the feeders to a sub panel in the house connected to a new 70 amp breaker and the bare wire was on my neutral bar. I needed to put an add a lug on for the bare wire, so thinking the wire was a ground i removed it from the neutral bar witch caused the lights to flicker inside the house and also a couple or surge strips and a battery charger to go up in smoke. I am curious as to why this happened in this situation.
