Ferret.

Ferret.

The traditional way is to use a Ferret, a can of sardines, a fan and some fishing line ( preferably on a reel).
Make sure the Ferret is hungry, put the fan at one end of the pipe and blow air through the pipe. Open the sardines and put them in front of the fan. At the other end tie the fishing line on the ferret ( you can buy harnesses for ferrets). Put the ferret in front of the pipe so he/she can smell the sardines.
if you can get inter-duct or polyethelene tube in the pipe the cable wil pull easier. I think it would be risky to pull FO cable in an old water pipe. You might talk the owner into at least one polypipe. It would be more reliable.

Transporters -The ferret?s anatomy and willingness to run through dark tunnels make them ideal in transporting cables through long pipes. Oilmen in the North Sea, telephone companies, camera crews and people working on airline jets have used ferrets for this purpose. The ferret wears a harness where a long thin nylon line is attached. The nylon line is then connected to the cable that needs to be pulled through the conduit. The use of mechanical devices for this purpose has made the ferret obsolete as a transporterhe following is from this site.http://weaselwords.com/ferret-articles/history-of-the-ferret."

I have worked with a couple of electricans that claimed they had ferrets and used them for wire pulling. Both has a lot of experience in underground work in big cities. Being that they were electricans I am sure they would not have lied to me.

Don't pull the string. Use a "mouse" -- not the creature but a cylinder of nylon line that pays out as it goes. That way, there's no increase in friction as you proceed through the pipe.

I'd think a plastic pig of some type would be best, but you can try the old plastic bag trick. With a more rigid pig, consider using water not gas to provide the force; got a fire main handy?

Agree about installing HDPE innerduct once you get a line in.
